Responsibilities and Duties
- Provide business-oriented legal advice to fast-growing high-tech businesses with an emphasis on actionable insight and recommendations.
- Work closely with business management and Japanese HQ in order to develop and implement new business models, ensure understanding of legal concepts and implications, and formulate negotiation strategies and roadmaps.
- Draft and negotiate a broad range of agreements, manage outside counsel, and ensure proper internal alignment and approval of deals.
- Conduct or oversee due diligence on portfolios, startup companies, and proposed deals.
- Handle corporate governance matters and manage processes, policies, and formalities as a regulated trust company.
- Create, implement and improve processes to mitigate risk, reduce inefficiencies, and improve responsiveness.
- Provide training on policies, practices, new business models, and legal issues to the business units.
Qualifications
- Fluency in Japanese - Professional Working to Native Level is a must.
- Must have a JD and be admitted to at least one state bar (New York or California).
- 4+ years of major law firm or relevant in-house experience with a demonstrated focus on the banking or investment/lending related financial area preferred.
- Comfortable in dynamic, fast-paced environments, with international teams and willingness to roll up your sleeves and do the work.
- Excellent business judgment and interpersonal skills to negotiate proactively with internal and external parties.
- Experience working with venture capital firms or investments, or counseling startup companies ideal.
